Parts #5: TIES
TIE = RHYTHM CONNECTOR
Ties are curved, horizontal lines that connect one note head to another, increasing its duration.
Ties function just like addition signs. Ties add duration to a note.
If a note’s stem goes down, the tie is on the top of the note head.
Default 6
If a notes stem goes up, the tie is on the bottom of the note head.
Default 8
The examples shows a tie extending a half note’s duration by adding one quarter note.
This is how a 3-beat note is created.     It’s Simple, 2+1=3
Ties can connect notes within a measure and also tie across the bar line.

The example below demonstrates a tie connecting notes across a bar line.

Part #3: BEAMS

Beams are Horizontal Lines.

Beams are thicker then stems, which makes them easier to distinguish as different from horizontal staff lines.
Beams connect to the end of stems and serve to define a note’s duration. (length)
Any number of stems can connect to beams.
As with stems, whether the beam is on top or beneath the note, the rhythm result is the same.

Notes with 1, 2 and 3 Beams are shown above.

When multiple notes attach to beams, they stack together. Beam combinations define the exact time allotment of each note to which they are attached.
Beams group notes together within a single beat. At times, an individual note requires a beamed note’s definition. This single note, (with its equivalent duration dictated by a beam), utilizes a different symbol. These notes have their own look, where the beam transforms into a flag.
Exact beam-defined time units, will be displayed shortly. For now, remember that beams help to define a note’s duration, group multiple notes and organize rhythm.

RHYTHM NOTATION PARTS

Notes are the product of combining specific parts of note-material.

Each piece of note-material possesses a specific and precise function, and together they determine the duration of a musical sound. Combined rhythm notation elements tell you how long to play a sound.

When individual parts of a note interact with one another, each has an exact function and unique properties.

First, I will teach you the details of each note part and then explain how these elements combine to become notes.

The chart below shows the main note-material parts.

Joining note-material elements builds the code of Rhythm Notation.

Welcome back! I am very appreciative that Scroll was “magically creative” while telling you the tale.
Scroll wanted to guide the class along further travels and continue the tale because there are more theories and additional contributors to the evolution of the music staff. As we all know, Scroll’s quest is to be quite thorough.

I told Scroll that we appreciate the offer, but everyone understands that dedicated and focused thought has created logical solutions to problems in music notation, exactly like practice. So – I made a deal with Scroll.

Scroll now is taking a short and well deserved vacation, flying around the world in the pursuit of timeless knowledge. Since Scroll is busy and I am on my way to the computer lab to prepare review charts, this is the perfect time for Cal to teach you all about rhythm notation. Cal, you have everyone’s focused attention.

Thanks, Q!Perfect Timing is what I am all about and what I will teach you.  Since you already know about keeping a steady tempo, it’s time for you to learn rhythm-notation symbols, their names, and what they all mean.

Acquiring rhythm and counting know-how, is the primary-step to becoming a skilled musician, one whom we can count on

Rhythm Notation is a new topic for most of you. Once you learn the symbols and what they mean, you will see that rhythm notation is very logical. Since I am a Rhythm Calculator, I will teach you the knowledge of how to calculate rhythm.

In my picture, did you notice that some of my note buttons are illuminated?

These buttons activate the proper note-code that unlocks a new Quest level. Rhythm Notation is the written code that musicians read in order to perform sounds of varied time within a tempo.

Rhythm is music’s most important layer!

It is now time to explore the code of Rhythm Notation, in the:

Rhythm notation serves to organize time and convey the composer’s rhythmic intentions to the performer. Each notated rhythm fine-tunes the correct and accurate measurement of sound duration. Different symbols represent duration of sounds.
Default 4
As you learned from Constance, Tempo is the speed of the regularly occurring accents of music. Rhythm is the organization of accent patterns within a tempo. Rhythmic durations are called note values. This makes perfect sense, since they are notated (written) and define the value (length) of the duration.
Rhythm notation involves the combining of notes of varied duration with the absence of notes, called rests. (Duration means length). Some notes have a duration that equals the length of one click of tempo, regardless of the Beats Per Minute. Some notes and rests can add up to two, three, four, or more clicks.
The word beat means one click of a tempo. Other notes take up only part of a beat and need to join with other notes or rests in order to fill the duration of time before the next beat commences. Beats are organized in recurring patterns of accent called Measures. Just as inches are the same length, measures are groups of beat patterns that have the same length of time.
The above may sound a little tricky, but is really very simple once you get the hang of it!

In the Rhythm Laboratory, you will learn specific notation symbols.
Notation symbols are combined in order to form notes.
Each note represents, a precise rhythm duration (length).
Now, it is time to study specific

Hi! I'm Cal the Rhythm Calculator

I remember Q’s email quite vividly.
It is a great honor that Q has asked me to join the Quest’s teaching team.
It began, “Cal my Pal, I know I can always count on you.”
Rhythm is my specialty, so I am pleased to be of assistance.
Within a beatI knew Q was asking me to teach Rhythm.
(You will know shortly why some of the words above are italicized.)
As part of the teaching staffScroll and Q promised to pitch in from time to time, as well.
So I placed my signature on the teaching contract, gladly signing on to share my know-how.
